Practise 5 new words at a time. Say the word, use it in a sentence, then find it in a book. When your child reads a word instantly on three different days, it's learned.
The Dolch lists (1936–1948) are a classic set of the most common words in children's books. Many schools use them or similar lists.

What are sight words?+
Very common words, like the, said and was, that children learn to recognise instantly instead of sounding out. Many don't follow normal phonics rules.
Which list should we start with?+
Pre-primer for ages 4–5, primer for kindergarten, then the first, second and third grade lists.
